Unless you are living under a rock, you know that students in Michigan that attend public schools take the M-step to demonstrate academic growth each year. This year in an amazing twist all of the policy makers in Lansing will take the test as well to show that they too are proficient at an 8th grade level.
It was determined that the 8th grade test would be the bench mark for the legislators since there was proof that all of them had reached that level in school. This being the 1st year the of the testing initiative, there will not be a performance bonus or penalty, but there is the possibility of implementing that in the future.
Law makers have responded favorably to the initiative. The ability to prove with data that they are competent has been the general theme. A few law makers have expressed frustration that the time used to take the test will never be recovered. Having the data that shows the proficiency of our policy makers will be worth it in the end.
Perhaps the most exciting outcome will be the report cards for each community and the governor. When testing is concluded we will be able to finally compare our elected officials to see which locale is doing a better job of finding the best public servants.
Results of the testing will be posted one week after today, April 1st, 2017.
